88-494 is a 36 FS “Flying Fiends” Block 40 F-16CG ready for a BFM sortie. The “Fiends” have flow from Osan AB in South Korea since 1974, first operating F-4’s then, in 1988, transitioning to the F-16. In 1990, they received Block 40 Vipers with LANTIRN precision guided weapon capability and night low level navigation capability.

Basic Fighter Maneuvering- BFM for short – is a bread and butter mission for every USAF fighter squadron. Whether flow from a low or high aspect start, the bottom line is kill your opponent as quickly as possible. Perhaps the most dynamic and certainly the highest “g” mission, BFM empahasises aircraft control, energy management, fuel management, airspace management, and weapons employment in a very small chunk of airspace with just two correctly configured planes.

In this case, the correctly configured plane is a F-16CG-40-GD with a centerline rack and 4 missile rails… a configuration sure to bring a smile to a Viper pilot’s face. Equipped with a CATM-9x and a T50 ACMI pod, this jet is ready for a mission that will provide a digital 3D recreation that can be viewed from any angle or perspective. 494 also carries standard Chaff and Flares and although loaded – it’s always loaded – the gun is safe with a holdback tool.

Also of note is the very non-standard markings on 494... the tail stripe and checkerboard pattern is a historic homage to the squadron's earlier makings in the Korean Conflict.

Following the fall of the Low Countries at the beginning of WW2, many surviving Dutch pilots escaped to England and form No. 322 Sqn (Dutch) within the RAF. Following the war, the squadron was reconstituted as part of the Dutch Army Fighter Division.

In 1980, 322 Sqn converted to the F-16A Block 15 which was licensed built in Holland by Fokker. In 1995, many of those jets were upgraded to Block 20 standards with the MLU (Mid Life Upgrade). These jets gained many capabilities of the USAF Block 50 including radar missile capability, a beefed-up intake structure allowing targeting pods to be carried Stations 5A and 5B, embedded GPS, an air-to-air interrogator, and the updated “C Model” cockpit.

J-167, shown based at Leeuwarden Air Base, began life as a Block 15X jet, and was assigned to No 322 Squadron who’s motto is “Deeds not Words.” The squadron is tasked with both Air Defense and Surface Attack duties and their jets proudly wear “Polly” the African Grey Parrot squadron mascot on their tail. No. 322 participates in NATO taskings as well as air intercepts over the North Sea.

J-137 is shown ready for a Tactical Intercept training mission with 1 x CATM-9M training missile, a TACTS instrumentation pod, 1 x AMD, 1 x 300 Centerline Fuel Tank.

Ohio’s ANG 112 FS traces its roots to 1917 making it one of the original National Guard flying units. Based at Toledo ANGB, today the “Stingers” fly F-16CM Vipers.

Their jets have been substantially upgraded over the years. The Pratt and Whitney powered, “small mouth” Block 42’s were so woefully under powered they were quickly relegated to training units. That changed in the early 2000’s when many of the jets were upgraded with the significantly more powerful F-100-PW-229 motors… those jets easily identifiable by their black carbon fiber nozzle “turkey feathers.” Along with the CCIP upgrade done to the Block 40/42 and 50/52 fleets, the Stinger’s jets are among the most cable in service.

89-2082 is shown as a post-CCIP upgraded jet with the -229 engine and the latest dark “Have Glass V” paint scheme adopted by the USAF in about 2012. She is depicted configured with a pair of 370 gallon wing tanks to get to the fight, 2 x AIM-120’s and 2 x AIM-9X’s, 576 rounds of 20mm ammunition in case there are bandits to get through, a centerline ALQ-184 and full Chaff and Flare buckets for self-protection, and 4 x GBU-54(v)/B LJDAM’s mounted on BRU-57/A “smart” Multiple Carriage Racks to do the job they came to do. Of note, the GBU’s are built around BLU-129/B carbon fiber bomb bodies developed specifically to reduce fragmentary collateral damage.

The first of many... F-16A 78-0001's serial number not only means she was the first airplane in the 1978 budget, she was the first production F-16 of the 4,500+ Vipers built to this day.

After a brief stop at the Edwards AFB test wing, she was assigned to the 34 TFS at Hill AFB in the first Viper RTU squadron and then went to Nellis AFB with Hill's Det 1.

She is depicted in 1983 flying with the 310th TFS "Top Hats" when she and the entire F-16 RTU program had moved to Luke AFB's 56 TFW in Arizona. She's shown ready for a range ride with a pair of SUU-20 dispensers each carrying 6 BDU-33 practice bombs, a CATM-9P, a "hot" gun, and a 300 gallon centerline external fuel tank.
