The Tomcat's of VMA 311 were formed early in the Second World War as Hell's Bells and flew Texans, Corsairs, Shooting Stars, Panthers, Cougars, and Skyhawks before converting to the AV-8B's in 1988. Currently based at MCAS Yuma, they have deployed multiple times both embarked with USN carriers and to forward deployment ashore locations and fly AV-8B+ Harrier II's. One of those jets, BuNo 165581, is a remanufactured, radar equipped AV-8B(R) and is depicted here loaded with a pair of GBU-54 Laser JDAM 500 lb bombs ready for a sortie from a foward depoyment field. In line with their motto "First in all things," No 1(F) Squadron was not only the RAF's first airplane squadron, they were the very first squadron to operate a VTOL airplane... the Harrier. They flew those original version jets from 1969 until converting to the new Harrier II GR5's in 1988. One of those GR5's, ZD335, is depicted deployed to Nellis AFB participating in Red Flag. She is loaded with a pair of CBLS dispensers each carrying four 3 kg practice low drag bombs, an AIM-9 missile for self defense, a ACMI pod for tracking and debriefing, a pair of external wing tanks, and a pair of ADEN 25 mm gun pods.

A development of the original Sea Harrier FRS.1, the FA.2 Shar served with the Royal Navy from 1988 though late March 2006 when the last jets from 801 Squadron were retired from service. The FA.2 featured the more powerful Mk 106 Pegasus engine, updated cockpit displays and a new ejection seat, and extensive avionics updates, but the most significant change was the addition of a radar guided missile capability courtesy of the AIM-120 AMRAAM and larger Blue Vixen radar. The redesigned nose to fit the radar was perhaps the easiest way to differentiate the FA.2 from its FRS.1 predecessor.
