Buzz Number FU-857 was the F-86F-1-NA that carried Capt Manuel “Pete” Fernandez to 14.5 kills during the Korean conflict. A standard wing Sabre with automatic leading edge slats which were better at low speeds than high, she featured the more powerful J47-GE-27 engine which none the less negated most of the altitude advantage MiG 15’s held over previous Sabre variants.

Assigned to the 334 FIS “Eagles” of the 4 FIW, she was based at Kimpo Airfield, also known as K-14. Fernandez was America’s third highest scoring Ace in Korea, the first Hispanic American to become an Ace, and achieved his total in less time than either of the pilots who eventually scored more victories. 12857 is shown carrying 11 confirmed victories in addition to two “damaged” and one “probable”. She additionally carries three inverted victory marks on the lower section of the nose which represent kills “awarded” to the Crew Chief and Armorer for their dedication and hard work. She also carries the broad yellow/black identification bands around the mid-fuselage and outer wing sections in addition to the one on the tail which was unique to the 4th FIW.

Fernandez’s Sabre is equipped with a pair of external 120 gallon wing tanks in addition to her six 0.50 Caliber nose mounted machine guns with 1,800 rounds total.
